Volta – Andean Agricultural Tool

About

A lightweight tool for small scale farming

Volta is a lightweight, portable farming tool designed for manual use on small-scale farms. Farmers in the Peruvian Andes face considerable difficulties as the steep terrain, limited transport infrastructure and low profitability does not allow for the use of machinery or automation. Cultivation and harvest are carried out manually using traditional tools, while the workforce is comprised mostly of elderly men and women. Volta allows these farmers to cultivate their land with less time and effort thanks to a pedal-operated mechanism that effectively turns over soil. The tool folds into a neat backpack with careful weight distribution across the shoulders, making it easy to transport.

We are a team of peruvian industrial designers: Andres Tokashiki, Valeria Pedraza and Camila Rodriguez; who were given the challenge to propose innovative solutions in the field of agriculture. As designers, we believe our mission is always to improve people's quality of life with different creations. Therefore, having an impact on a big community on our own country is extremely rewarding. In this opportunity our main goal was to improve the daily work of small farmers in the Peruvian Andes. Thats why we created VOLTA, a tool that reduces physical efforts, improves the farmer's posture and secure its way from home to labor area.more
