Plasticbank is a service that leverages the availability of plastics waste, especially within communities across the Global South, as a new commodity and as an alternative to currency, which can create value in the context in which it is deployed. Its mission is to empower individuals and communities that suffer from the consequences of plastic pollution. The Exchange Machine allows users to deposit their plastic waste and receive financial credit in return, based on a new kind of ‘stock market’ for plastic. This generates a new utility for the community whilst helping to create a cleaner environment.
