About

Affordable hand exoskeleton guided by a Brain-Machine-Interface to support post-stroke rehabilitation

HERO (Hand Exoskeleton for Rehabilitation Objectives) is an affordable robotic device designed to assist in the rehabilitation of stroke patients. Physical therapy associated with robotic devices is becoming a promising tool for post-stroke rehabilitation, an important factor given that there has been a dramatic increase in the incidence of this disease over the past few years. HERO is a lightweight, comfortable device which has been shown to have 91.5% accuracy and whilst being used in hospitals and clinical settings could also be used in the home, thereby speeding up the rehabilitation process.

We are Rommel Araujo and Fabricio Brasil, a team of engineers with postgraduate degrees in neuroengineering. We are passionate about developing med-tech solutions in this area. We spent two years at Santos Dumont Institute searching for accessible technologies to recover motor activity after a stroke. This work resulted in the development of a hand exoskeleton for upper limb rehabilitation, which project was shared with the scientific community in the Journal Frontiers in Neuroscience. However, we decided to bring the device outside the academic walls and invest our energy to launch the product in the market. Nowadays, so many patients are anxious for new solutions to help their recovery, and we think we can help them with that. We hope that our project may increase the access of millions of people worldwide to state-of-the-art technologies for motor rehabilitation.more
